One of the interesting aspects in life is the subtle signs exhibited by the human beings when they lie. These signs when observed carefully could be a very handy tool in determining whether a person is lying to you.
1. An inconsistent eye contact or in most cases no eye contact, when a person is in conversation with you, is the most obvious symptom of a person who is lying or who is trying to lie. On the other hand the experienced and practiced liars tend to increase eye contact unusually to create the impression of not lying. In general, people have a habit of looking in the eye of the person through about a fifty percent of their conversation.
3. The body language of a person is an accurate image of the person's psychological state. A person, who is not used to lying, is in an alien arena when it comes to lying. They are bound to be anxious which would show up in nervous actions like tapping the leg, moving their shoulders, clasping and unclasping of hands, etc. On the other hand a practiced liar would lose his natural poise by trying to be too casual while lying.
4. Some people tend to blurt out a part of the truth and they try to amend it with a lie. This leads to statements which contradict what they had said earlier. Due to anxiety such inconsistencies in the conversation occurs which is an easy signal to pick up.
5. The alternative approach taken by some people is to get on the defensive. They tend to accuse the other person of lying. They might even be uncommunicative in certain circumstances.
6. A person who has reluctantly lied would not want you to probe more into the issue. They would be looking for the first opportunity to change topic. If you intimate a change of topic they would be more than happy to oblige. A person who is not lying would not fear talking about the issue as long as you wish to.
7. Some people try to change the mood of the conversation by introducing humorous or sarcastic remarks about their lie to make it seem natural.
All these are sometimes the natural characteristics of a person. Also an experienced liar would be aware of these subtle issues and might take steps to prevent detection. The best way to go is to catch the liar red-handed while he is lying rather than to look for after affects. Further it is also easier to detect these subtle changes in the behavior of a person only if you are well accustomed to the person's normal behavior!
